First Garden- The Ups and Downs

August 9th, 2010 posted by admin

I have recently moved out of my parents house and in to a flat of my own. When looking I was adamant I wanted a garden, I grew up with parents who a slightly obsessive compulsive about their garden and that has unsurprisingly rubbed off on me.
So we moved in to this beautiful little flat with a gorgeous and manageable garden that was totally barren, leaving me with the opportunity to plant everything (in between my locum jobs of course, turns out it probably was going to take a little more attention than that)!
So I started off with turning the soil, which almost broke my back as it was like cement, and then applied some compost and began to plant. However with the blistering heat that has been 2010 summer so far, things did not go quite to plan.
The grass is very poorly, apparently it does not like being starved of water. We haven’t got access for a hose so I have been watering the WHOLE garden with a watering can. Most of the plants I bought have dried up or are also quite poorly. This is all somewhat depressing for myself, I naively thought gardening would be simple just because I grew up with- apparently not!
Despite this I have had some successes, the sunflowers that I planted from seed are doing very well and some other little flowers are doing brilliantly in the fight against the frazzle. However my pride and joy have got to be my tomatoes. They are fabulous! The plants themselves are strong, big and thick and covered in large healthy leaves. the tomatoes that are already growing are very healthy too, I am very excited about when they finally turn red!
Anyway my early progress in to the world of gardening has been a massive learning curve. My advice to any else attempting to create their first garden is listen to your elders! My Life coach SW london lady said a project such as gardening is a great release for the soul.
