Composting methods for kitchen waste

If you are planning on growing vegetables in your garden then it is worth remembering that you are taking resources out of the soil and this situation must be addressed if you want to protect the long term health of your garden. There are plenty of artificial fertiliser products which can be used to replace lost nutrients but there is no substitute for good compost, especially if you run an organic garden.

I think there is something rather poetic about using kitchen waste to make your own compost. It allows the left over peelings to go back into the soil and produce next year’s crop as well. It is certainly a positive step towards a sustainable system- we can’t all afford hybrid cars after all. Even if you are not growing vegetables then the plants will still appreciate the improved conditions linked with the application of compost.

If you do not have room for a compost heap there are many options still available to you, any of which can produce great quality compost. Black bags can be filled with biodegradable waste like vegetable peelings and fallen leaves and then simply left in the corner of the garden to rot down. If you have more space but think that a compost heap looks messy then why not have it underground! Just dig a hole and fill it up with vegetable waste and then once it is full, cover it with soil and dig a new hole, when you come back in a few months it will be full of rich dark compost.
