It is important though to always carry out the best possible practices you can in the garden to ensure you get the healthiest and happiest vegetables you can. So some crop planning is essential. Some antagonistic relationships within the garden patch that you must avoid at all costs.
1. Do not plant tomatoes next to potatoes as they do not like it and this is how blight can transfer.
2. Aubergines dislike being planted alongside tomatoes so plant them among dwarf French beans and squash as this will be a better companion for them.
3. Onions, leeks and garlics should be planted away from fruit crops as their smell which is beneficial in deterring unwanted pests can also deter beneficial pollinating insects.
4. Pumpkins dislikes potatoes although they do need similar soils.
5. Sweet corns dislike sunflowers and tomatoes.
6. Basil should not be planted next to herbs like Rue and Sage as their bitter essential oil and smell with interfere with the sweet and savoury taste or the basil.
